Basic Procedures - Videoconferences

A videoconference is any conference that utilizes videoconferencing technology. Similar to teleconferences, participants communicate with each other from various locations in videoconferences. Unlike teleconferences, participants in a videoconference can send video and other images. Therefore, communication in a videoconference is via audio and video.

All videoconferences require a “CODEC.” A CODEC is essentially a computer that is designed to COmpress and DECompress audio and video signals. Some CODECs have cameras and microphones built into them, while others require separate cameras and microphones.

Videoconferences can also use a Multi-point Control Unit (MCU) to connect more than 2 sites at the same time. The MGC Manager is capable of controlling 3 different MCUs at the same time.
