Outdoor Climbing

Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn the skills necessary for safely climbing outdoors.

Most indoor facilities do not have certification tests for outdoor climbing, so the information in these lessons is only to improve your overall climbing skills. This lesson will cover the following information:

1. Techniques for setting up outdoor anchor systems.

2. The difference between Sport Climbing and "Trad" Climbing.

3. The most common gear used in outdoor climbing.

4. Bouldering safety.

There's Nothing Like The Real Thing

Indoor climbing gyms are great for helping climbers improve their skills, or to help climbers stay in shape during days that are unpleasant for being outdoors. However, nothing compares to the experience of climbing on real rock, and conquering natural climbing routes.

Now that you've had time to practice your top-rope and lead climbing and belaying skills, it's time to take those skills outdoors. The only completely new information in this lesson is how to set up anchor systems. The other information is similar to information covered in previous lessons, but with a little more information about climbing gear and natural environments.
