Belay Test Training

Belay Techniques

The belayer is essential to the safety of the climber. Not only is the belayer the person responsible for stopping the fall of a climber, but they are responsible for the overall safety of the climber. The word "belay" is a French term that means "to keep safe," and that's the purpose of a belayer.

Four Easy Steps

The most common belay technique involve the following steps: pull, cover, slide, lock. The "lock" step can also be used immediately after the "pull" step for additional safety.

Regardless of whether the belayer uses a pull-cover-slide-lock or pull-lock-cover-slide belay method, the belayer must NEVER open his or her right hand. If the belayer opens his or her right hand for any reason, the belayer will fail the belay certification test and put the climber at risk for serious harm.
